How to get your first teaching job with zero experience

Every fresher hits the same wall: postings that ask for two years' experience, for a job that's the only way to get it. Here's the secret from the other side of the table — schools hire freshers every single season. We do. The freshers who get hired aren't the ones who somehow found experience; they're the ones who understood what replaces it.

What schools actually screen freshers for

• The demo class, above everything. For experienced candidates the demo confirms the CV; for freshers the demo IS the CV. A fresher who plans and delivers one strong lesson beats a mediocre candidate with five years logged — every time, at any school worth joining.
• Subject fluency under questioning. Freshers fail interviews on wobbly fundamentals more than on missing experience. If you claim Grade 8 Maths, expect to be probed until the textbook ends.
• Coachability. Schools invest a year of mentoring in every fresher; they're screening for people who take feedback without flinching. How you respond when the demo panel critiques your lesson is itself part of the test.

The five entry doors, ranked

1. 1Teaching internships. The single best door: structured, mentored, and a live audition. NCFE runs a paid 8-week summer internship, and interns who impress convert to offers — the same pattern holds across good school networks.
2. 2Assistant and co-teacher roles. You run activities, mark, manage small groups — under a lead teacher. Twelve months here converts to a full PRT role almost automatically, because the school has watched you work.
3. 3Early-years positions. The most fresher-friendly segment: demand for NTT/Montessori/ECCEd-qualified educators structurally exceeds supply, as our early-years guide details.
4. 4Maternity-cover and mid-year replacement posts. Schools filling a July vacancy need someone in the classroom Monday; they'll take a promising fresher they'd have passed over in the leisurely December round. Less choice, lower bar, real experience.
5. 5New campuses and tier-2 cities. Where applicant pools are thin, fresher applications get read properly — and a founding team (like our Ballari campus) turns 'first job' into 'ground-floor opportunity'.

The no-experience resume that isn't empty

You have more evidence than you think — it's just not labelled 'work experience'. Your B.Ed. or D.El.Ed. practice-teaching weeks are real classroom hours: name the school, the grades, what you taught, and one thing that measurably improved. Private tuition counts — 'took three Grade 10 students from failing to 70%+ in board Maths' is a student outcome, and outcomes are exactly what our resume guide says to lead with. NCC/NSS instruction, Sunday-school classes, coaching a sport, training juniors at a previous non-teaching job: all of it demonstrates the core act of making someone else better at something.

Prepare for the demo before you're invited

Since the demo decides fresher hiring, prepare it before you apply, not after the invite. Build two complete 30-minute lessons in your strongest topics, deliver them to anyone who'll sit still — cousins, a whiteboard, a phone camera — until the timing is muscle memory. Timing your applications

December–February is the widest window, when schools staff for June — but it's also when you compete with experienced candidates. The fresher-friendly windows are March–May, when schools fill remaining gaps faster and cheaper, and July–November replacement hiring, when speed matters more than years logged.
