TL;DR

One page that maps the whole journey — from choosing a qualification to landing a job to becoming a principal — with links to our deep-dive guides at every step.

India employs close to ten million school teachers, and private schools alone hire hundreds of thousands of new ones every year. Yet almost nobody enters the profession with a map. Qualification advice is scattered across exam-prep sites, salary information is folklore, and career-growth paths are something you discover only after you're inside.

This guide is that map. It covers the whole arc of a teaching career in India — choosing your level and qualification, finding and winning a job, and growing beyond the classroom — and links to our detailed guides on each step. It's written by the team that hires teachers for NCFE Schools' four campuses, so it describes how hiring actually works, not how it's supposed to.

Is teaching a good career in India in 2026?

Structurally, yes — and more so than a decade ago. Three forces are driving demand:

  • Private-school growth. Enrolment keeps shifting toward private schools, and new campuses need full staffrooms — CBSE alone affiliates hundreds of new schools a year.
  • NEP 2020's ripple effects. The foundational-stage focus has made trained early-years educators genuinely scarce, and the push for experiential learning rewards teachers with real pedagogy over rote deliverers.
  • STEM teacher shortages. Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science candidates are outnumbered by vacancies in every metro — which shows up directly in pay premiums.

The honest trade-offs: starting pay is modest compared with tech or finance, band progression rewards patience, and the work is emotionally demanding. Against that: mid-afternoon finishes, 60–70 days of annual holidays, visible purpose, and — at good schools — a leadership track that pays respectably (more on that below).

Step 1: choose your level

Indian school careers are organised around grade bands, and everything — qualification, salary, daily craft — follows from which band you teach. The full breakdown is in our guide to PRT, TGT and PGT roles; the short version:

LevelGradesThe craft2026 metro pay (monthly)
Early yearsNursery–KGPlay-based learning, foundational skills₹22,000 – ₹55,000
PRT (Primary)1–5Pedagogy-heavy: literacy, numeracy, classroom culture₹28,000 – ₹65,000
TGT6–8 (often 9–10)Subject teaching, board-class preparation₹35,000 – ₹80,000
PGT11–12 (often 9–12)Content-deep: board results, competitive-exam rigour₹40,000 – ₹1,00,000+

Pick by how you like to teach, not just by pay. A brilliant Grade 11 physics teacher and a brilliant Grade 2 teacher are doing almost entirely different jobs.

Step 2: get qualified

Your level determines your entry ticket. In brief — with the full detail, including when CTET matters and the experience-instead-of-B.Ed. exceptions, in our CBSE teacher qualification guide:

  • Early years: a 1-year NTT, Montessori or ECCEd diploma — the fastest formal route into any classroom. Our early-years career guide compares the options.
  • Primary (PRT): bachelor's degree plus D.El.Ed. or B.Ed. — which of the two to choose is its own decision.
  • TGT: bachelor's in your subject plus B.Ed. — strict for board classes.
  • PGT: master's in your subject plus B.Ed. — no exceptions at Grades 11–12.
  • CTET: mandatory for central government schools, a strong plus (not a hard gate) at private schools — who actually needs it, explained.

Coming from another profession? The qualification math changes — often in your favour. Our career-switcher roadmap covers the 12-month path from corporate to classroom.

Step 3: find the jobs

School hiring in India is seasonal and local. The peak window runs December–April ahead of the June academic year; replacement hiring trickles year-round and moves fast. Metro markets have the volume — our Bangalore teacher jobs guide maps India's densest school market, including which neighbourhoods are adding schools and what each segment pays. Tier-2 cities have fewer applicants per post and increasingly offer relocation support — our Ballari guide is the case study. Before comparing offers across cities, calibrate with what teachers actually earn city by city — after rent, the biggest number is often not the best offer.

Channels that actually work, in rough order of effectiveness: direct applications on school career sites (like this one), referrals from teachers already inside, walk-in drives in the Jan–March window, and job portals — useful for discovering openings, weak for standing out.

Step 4: get hired

A serious school's process has three gates, and we've written a deep guide for each:

  1. 1The shortlist. Your CV has about 30 seconds of a principal's attention. Lead with student outcomes, not adjectives — our teacher resume guide shows the exact structure that survives the stack.
  2. 2The interview. Most schools circle the same 12 questions — classroom management, weak results, angry parents, and now AI. We've broken down what each question really tests.
  3. 3The demo lesson. The stage that decides more offers than everything else combined. The observer's checklist — and the five mistakes that sink good teachers — is in our demo class guide.

Step 5: grow

Teaching has a real ladder — teacher → mentor/senior teacher → head of department → coordinator → vice-principal → principal — and at good schools it's a published path, not a lottery. Pay decouples from the PRT/TGT/PGT bands once you step into leadership: principals at established private schools earn ₹1,00,000–₹2,50,000+ a month. How the ladder works, what gets people promoted, and the master-teacher alternative for those who never want to leave the classroom: our career growth guide.

And one skill now shapes growth at every rung: working fluently with AI. Schools increasingly screen for it at hiring and reward it in promotion. What that actually looks like day-to-day — and what it emphatically doesn't mean — is in how teachers actually use AI.

Frequently asked questions

Is teaching a good career in India?

Yes, with honest caveats. Demand is structurally strong — private-school growth, NEP-driven early-years expansion and STEM teacher shortages all favour candidates — and the lifestyle (mid-afternoon finishes, 60–70 holiday days) is unmatched. Starting pay is modest, but leadership roles at good private schools pay ₹1,00,000–₹2,50,000+ monthly.

How do I start a teaching career in India?

Pick your grade level first, since it sets the qualification: a 1-year NTT/Montessori/ECCEd diploma for early years, a degree plus D.El.Ed./B.Ed. for primary, subject degree plus B.Ed. for TGT, and a master's plus B.Ed. for PGT. Then apply in the December–April hiring season, prepared for a CV screen, an interview and a demo lesson.

What is the salary of a school teacher in India in 2026?

In private metro schools: roughly ₹28,000–₹65,000 per month for primary teachers, ₹35,000–₹80,000 for TGTs and ₹40,000–₹1,00,000+ for PGTs, depending on experience and subject scarcity. Coordinators, heads of department and principals earn beyond these bands.

Can I get a teaching job without experience?

Yes. Schools hire freshers with the right qualification every season — the demo lesson matters far more than years logged. Paid teaching internships (NCFE runs an 8-week summer one) and early-years roles are the most fresher-friendly entry points.
